Study paths

For Russian applicants the center of gravity is the engineering master's, and there are two ways in.

The Chinese-taught route is the traditional one: a preparatory year of intensive Mandarin to HSK 4–5, then a master's degree in Chinese. It is the cheaper path, it fits the many joint engineering and energy programs where Chinese is the working language, and it opens the widest set of universities in our corpus. The HSK guide explains the levels; the two paths guide puts both routes side by side.

The English-taught route skips Chinese for admission β€” a narrower but real set of engineering master's programs at major universities, shown in the filtered list below.

Applicants coming from Russian specialist degrees (спСциалитСт) apply to Chinese master's programs as degree-holders; the admission set is the usual one β€” transcripts, degree certificates, a study plan and usually two recommendation letters for graduate admission. Doctoral study is a separate track: most engineering PhD seats are admitted through a supervisor's acceptance first, so identify a research group before applying.

Location matters: Harbin is the historic hub with the deepest Russian student community, and northern cities generally suit students who tolerate cold winters. Scholarships run through CSC Type A (embassy channel in Moscow) and Type B (university track) β€” start from the CSC Type A vs Type B guide and the scholarships hub. Living costs are in the costs overview and city guides.

Tuition & budget

Living costs (dorm, food, transport, insurance) are covered per city rather than per nationality β€” see the costs overview and our city guides, which include monthly budgets and halal-food notes.

Scholarships for Russian students

CSC Type A is applied at the Chinese embassy in your country (country quotas) and Type B directly through the university. Country-specific and globally open awards are both listed β€” quotas vary by country and year, so confirm in each official notice. See the CSC Type A vs Type B guide and the scholarships hub.

Visa & arrival

Admitted applicants receive an admission letter and a JW202 form (JW201 for Chinese Government Scholarship holders) and apply for an X1 visa β€” study over 180 days β€” at the Chinese embassy in Moscow or the consulates serving your region. Shorter stays use an X2. Within 30 days of arrival the X1 converts to a residence permit for study at the local Entry-Exit Administration, organized with your university's international office.

Apply as soon as the JW form arrives β€” the queue peaks before September. Our student visa guide covers documents, health checks and registration in detail.

Frequently asked questions

Do Russian students need HSK to study a master's in China?

For Chinese-taught master's programs yes β€” typically HSK 4–5, often after a preparatory year. A smaller set of English-taught engineering master's programs admits without Chinese.

Which fields do Russian students usually pick?

Engineering dominates β€” mechanical, electrical, aerospace, power and materials β€” often tied to energy and infrastructure cooperation between the two countries.

Where do Russian students usually study?

Harbin has the longest-standing Russian student community, and universities across northern and northeastern China recruit actively. Our city guide covers Harbin's costs and climate.

Are scholarships available for Russian applicants?

The Chinese Government Scholarship runs through Type A (the Chinese embassy in Moscow) and Type B (direct university applications). Quotas vary by country and year β€” confirm in the official notice.

Can I study an engineering master's in English instead?

Yes β€” some universities run English-taught master's programs in engineering fields. The programs below show what we currently track at master's level.
