Application timeline for September entry: month-by-month plan
Published 2026-09-21
Chinese university intakes run on one main clock: September entry (a smaller March intake exists for some language and graduate programs). Here is the calendar, planned backwards from enrollment day.
12–18 months before (Sept of the previous year)
- Shortlist universities and programs — use our university corpus and program search
- If you need HSK: register for the next test cycle; HSK 4–5 needs serious preparation time
- If you need IELTS/TOEFL for English-taught programs: book a test date with buffer for a retake
September – November
- University online application portals open (most Chinese universities open between late November and January)
- Gather documents: passport, transcripts with notarized translations, graduation/attendance certificates, study plan, two recommendation letters (for master’s/PhD), physical exam form
- Decide your scholarship route — embassy (Type A) or university (Type B) — see the CSC guide
December – March (the crunch)
- CSC Type A embassy deadlines typically fall January–early April — country-specific, check your embassy
- CSC Type B and university scholarship deadlines cluster December–mid-March
- Submit university applications even if you missed scholarship deadlines — admission and scholarship are separate processes; you can also arrive self-funded and apply for university scholarships after Year 1
April – June
- Admission letters and JW202/JW202 forms arrive (email first)
- Accept your offer, pay any deposit, and apply for your X1 visa — see the visa guide
July – August
- Book flights (arrive 1–2 weeks before registration)
- Arrange money: first months in cash/unionpay-able card until you open a Chinese bank account during enrollment
- Pack originals of every document
September
- Register, get your residence permit conversion started within 30 days, SIM card, insurance — and welcome to China.
Missing a scholarship deadline does not kill your plan — it postpones the funding to the next cycle. But missing the March–April application window for September entry usually means waiting a full year, so protect those months.
