Study paths

Thai engagement with Chinese universities runs on two tracks at once: short-term exchange and full degrees.

The exchange track — one semester or a summer program — uses an X2 visa and needs no Chinese. It is the low-commitment way to test a city and a university before committing to a degree; ask your home university in Thailand which exchange agreements exist. Credits from an exchange usually transfer through your home institution's agreement rather than automatically, so confirm recognition with your faculty before you fly.

For full degrees, the English-taught route offers direct entry to business, languages and education programs with no Chinese requirement. The Chinese-taught route — preparatory year to HSK 4–5, then a degree in Chinese — is cheaper and opens almost every university in our corpus; our two paths guide compares them and the HSK guide plans the language part.

Location matters for Thai students more than most: Kunming, Nanning and Guangzhou are the closest major student cities, each with its own climate, costs and food scene in our city guides. Scholarships run through CSC Type A (embassy channel in Bangkok) and Type B (university track) — see the scholarships hub and budget from the costs overview.

Tuition & budget

Published annual tuition — typical range across the programs below: CNY 35,000/yr typical range — pending verification; each figure is the university's own published number, never converted.

Living costs (dorm, food, transport, insurance) are covered per city rather than per nationality — see the costs overview and our city guides, which include monthly budgets and halal-food notes.

Scholarships for Thai students

CSC Type A is applied at the Chinese embassy in your country (country quotas) and Type B directly through the university. Country-specific and globally open awards are both listed — quotas vary by country and year, so confirm in each official notice. See the CSC Type A vs Type B guide and the scholarships hub.

Visa & arrival

Degree students (over 180 days) apply for an X1 visa with an admission letter and JW202 form (JW201 for CSC scholars) at the Chinese embassy in Bangkok or the consulate serving your region; exchanges and semesters under 180 days use an X2. The X1 converts to a residence permit within 30 days of arrival — your university's international office handles the paperwork with you.

File the visa application as soon as the JW form arrives; the pre-September queue is the longest of the year. Documents, health checks and police registration are covered in our student visa guide.
